Altamont StoryMap
In 2024, a community group called Historic Altamont, Inc. launched a new website that is packed full of stories, maps and photos detailing the rich history of the Village and it’s surrounding communities. It’s called The Village of Altamont StoryMap, and it uses maps and information from the Albany County Geography Information System to precisely locate areas of historic interest around our fair village.
The text was derived by David Bourque from “Images of America: Altamont” by Keith C Lee of Many of the photos were supplied by Dan Barker of the Village Archives and Museum. You can find it online through Historic Altamont’s Facebook page, on the Village Website or by using the link above. The Village of Altamont StoryMap is a work in progress and new images and text will be continuously added.
Websites
Rootsweb– This is a NYGenWeb county site with an interactive discussion list, bibliographies and many links to local organizations and resources.
The Colonial Albany Project– This is a website coordinated by the NYSMuseum. This site includes biographies of individuals who lived in the city of Albany prior to the Industrial Revolution and information on jobs, buildings and maps.
Genealogical Resources @ the New York State Library– This website includes a description of the resources and an excellent getting started section.
Historic Albany– This is a resource from the Historic Albany Foundation. It is an excellent source for those interested in historic buildings and architecture.
Three Rivers: Hudson Mohawk Scoharie– This site represents the valleys surrounding the three rivers and hosts an eclectic mix of historical links, articles and more.
Albany County Hall of Records– This is a joint project between AlbanyCounty and the City of Albany. This site includes many historical records as well as finding aids, programs and services.
Historical Albany County– This is a website provided by the government of Albany County, NY. The site includes a link to historical records, archives and information.
I Spy My Hometown– This site includes historical information and photographs about Bethlehem, Brunswick, East Greenbush, Guilderland, HoosickFalls, Rensselaerville and Voorheesville.
The New Netherland Project– This website’s main objective is to completely transcribe, translate and publish Dutch documents from New York libraries, museums and archives that relate to the 17th century colony of New Netherland.
Albany Hilltowns– A historical resource about the Helderberg Hilltowns of Rensselaerville, Berne, Knox and Westerlo.
New York Heritage Digital Collections– This site is a project of the NY 3Rs Association. It is a research portal for students, teachers, historians, genealogists and anyone else interested in the history of New York State.
Berne Historical Project– This is a volunteer effort to share the history and genealogy of the people of Berne, NY. This resource hosts an amazing amount of information for both historians and genealogists.
Canadian Genealogy Center– This is a site that allows users to search the National Archives of Canada, National Library of Canada and the GenealogyCenter.
Ellis Island– This site is a historical archive of immigration records, offering by-name searches of passenger-ship manifests.
Genealogical Research System from the Daughters of the American Revolution– This is a collection of databases containing materials that have been collected since the DAR’s inception in 1890. It includes a whole host of resources for historical and genealogical researchers.
GENUKI– Genealogy of the United Kingdom and Ireland. This is a collection of genealogical information pages concerning locations throughout Great Britain.
Irish Genealogy– This is a site dedicated to helping people search for their family history. Its search feature allows people to search a number of sources of online information.
Library of Congress- The American Folklife Center– LoC’s FolklifeCenter hosts cultural documentation of regional, cultural and ethnic groups within the United States and around the globe. Resources include images, songs, accounts of daily life and much more.
Library of Congress- Prints and Photographs Reading Room– A site containing 13.7 million images documenting the lives of the American people. This site includes photographs, prints, technical drawings, prints and more.
