Train Station
In July 2005, the Altamont Free Library acquired the historic Altamont Train Station for conversion to its new location. The train station, built in 1897 as part of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad, is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Library is currently housed in the basement of a Key Bank, and is not handicapped accessible. A move to the renovated Train Station will allow accessibility and service to the entire community.
The Library acquired the wooden Victorian structure, complete with eyebrow windows and copula, for $250,000. The Town of Guilderland issued a $300,000 bond to cover the purchase price, which the Library will pay back over the coming years. The building is in need of major renovations, including a new roof, heating and cooling system, and exterior repairs, with a total project budget of $1,000,000. The Library is applying for grants and contributions from State, civic and business leaders, as well as individuals and families to help defray the costs of the renovations. Support has been strong, and with $300,000 in hand, work is expected to begin in the next several months on Phase I of the project, replacement of the slate roof.
Individuals interested in helping with the costs of the restoration and move are invited to use our Donation Pledge Form.
